WhatsApp Allows Users to Create Groups Without Titles

In a recent Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg announced that WhatsApp users can now create small groups without the need to name them beforehand. This new feature eliminates the previous requirement of selecting a group name during the setup process.

TechCrunch reports that unnamed groups are limited to six members instead of the 1,024 participant limit for named groups. In addition, WhatsApp is said to automatically generate placeholder names for unnamed groups based on their members. (For example, “Rocco & Li-Chen” for the conversation between them in Zuckerberg’s example image below.) Depending on how they’ve saved members’ contact information, the group name will also appear differently for each member.

When you join an anonymous group with people who haven’t saved your contact information, it will show your phone number to the group, according to the notification. This suggests that the feature is designed more for established friends, family or colleagues and less for strangers.

TechCrunch reports that the feature will roll out globally “over the next few weeks.”
